COMMUNITY EVENTS

Los Bagels celebrates over fifteen years of community service. Los Bagels community involvement ranges from donations (to just about any organization that asks) to giving employees a paid, community service day. Los Bagels serves many locally produced products and is an active member of Humboldt Harvest. Los Bagels feeds the homeless through donations to the Eureka Food Bank and the Arcata Food Endeavor. Six Rivers Planned Parenthood is another of the many organizations Los Bagels supports.

The I- Block Party, a fund raiser for Arcata's sister city, Camoapa, Nicaragua, is Los Bagels' biggest, annual community event. The relationship between the two cities began when the owners of Los Bagels wanted to establish a local relief organization for victims of the war in Nicaragua.

Los Bagels supports sporting and youth organizations such as the HSU Crew and Ultimate teams, the Tri-Kids Triathalon, 4-H LEAP, and HSU's YES House. Los Bagels' Annual 2 on 2 Basketball Tournament is a fund raiser for Camp Unalayee("place of friends"), a youth camp in the Trinity Alps where kids build esteem and a sense of community. Los Bagels, in conjunction with and the Arcata Police Department, developed the Rural Burl Mural Project, a diversion program which hooks up local artists and kids to design and paint large murals. The kids get a positive outlet for their creativity and Los Bagels' storage shed becomes a work of art.

A strong supporter of the arts in Humboldt County, Los Bagels' Old Town Eureka store is home to the Truchas Gallery, which features a different local artist each month. As a corporate sponsor of CenterArts, Los Bagels helps bring performing arts to the community. Local children benefit from Los Bagels' involvement in the Arts in the Schools program, which subsidizes CenterArts tickets for schools. Los Bagels is an underwriter for various public broadcasting stations KEET TV, KHSU and KMUD.

Over the years, Los Bagels has donated millions of bagels to youth groups, the Food Bank, school fundraisers, environmental groups, and public television and radio pledge drives.

I Block Party
The I-Block Party, a fundraiser for Arcata's sister city, Camoapa, Nicaragua, is Los Bagels' biggest, annual community event. The first party, in 1986, funded the Duane Flatmo mural, which adorns Wildwood Music and looks over the Los Bagels parking lot. The fundraiser was such a success that the owners of Los Bagels wanted to continue it. They decided to establish a local relief organization for victims of the war in Nicaragua, and use the I-Block Party as funding source. Thus began the relationship between the two cities, and one of Arcata's most looked forward to events.

One day each September, we close I Street between 10th & 11th Streets. Representatives from the Sister City Project are on hand to tell about their latest visit to Camoapa. There is a face painting area for the kids, beer booth for the adults, and barbecue for all. A sound stage in the parking lot gives party guests a chance to dance all day to some of Humboldt County's finest bands. At the silent auction table, you can bid on local products from a variety of local artists, restaurants and entrepreneurs such as Yakima, Hot Knots, Marimba One, Sing-Ha, Bubbles, Kokotat, and Wildwood Music.

Arcata's Taste of the Holidays
Taste of the Holidays is one of the yearly kick offs to the holiday season. Held in early December, this event is put on by the Arcata Sunrise Rotary Club as their big benefit/fund raiser. Local food vendors are invited to participate by providing free samples of their culinary bests, and the Rotary then charges an entry fee to those who want to eat, drink and be merry. Los Bagels always offers a delicious variety of mini-bagels and spreads, bread samples, cookies, and rugulah. This is a fun social benefit for all who attend as well as a great way to highlight the wide array of Humboldt County food producers.

Art's Alive!
Unbeknownst to most, Humboldt County has the second highest number of artist per capita in the state and as a result more than 35 galleries and several active art organizations now exist to display the work of these local wonders. Los Bagels in Old Town Eureka is also known as Truchas Gallery to many, and every other month you can find the work of a different artist displayed on our walls. Then on the first Saturday of every month, the various Old Town galleries host Arts Alive! Whereby they open their doors to the public from 6-9pm providing food, wines and, of course, wonderful sights for the senses.

Taste of Main Street
Every year, at the end of March, Eureka holds the "Taste of Main Street" event as the culinary precursor to the annual Jazz Festival. For a few hours in the early evening, over 500 ticket holders hit the streets of Old Town savoring the specialties of over 30 different restaurants, bakeries, and cafes. Los Bagels has been a participant for years, offering folks tasty samples of our bagels and spreads, corn rye bread and mini-knish. It is an evening of mouth-watering fun!

2-0n-2 Basketball Tournament
Enjoy playing an intense game of basketball for a good cause? Every spring Los Bagels hosts a three-day round robin elimination basketball tournament to raise money for Camp Unalayee. The tournament itself is organized by two local players and attracts as many as twenty teams of two. Participants are charged an entry fee and prizes are donated by various local businesses such as Kokotat Calistoga and ourselves. The money raised helps benefit Camp Unalayee which is a non-profit wilderness camp in the Trinity Alps geared toward providing young people ages 10-17, from all racial and economic backgrounds, a magical learning experience in the great outdoors.
