HOLIDAYS
El Dia de los Muertos
Every year Los Bagels celebrates El Dia de los Muertos, or Day of the Dead, on November 1st and 2nd in recognition of the national Mexican holiday. Death has a unique persona in Mexico that is not found anywhere else in the world. The ancient Mexicans believed that life issued from death just as death issued from life, and with the introduction of Catholicism, attention was placed on the spirits of the dead, rather than on Death itself. And so every November 2nd the Mexican people celebrate the return of their dear departed whom, as ethereal souls, come back for one day to their homes and families. Beautiful altars are created to honor the souls and often they are adorned with marigolds, incense, candles, personal mementos and favorite foods of the departed. Throughout the day, music is played and stories are told. It is a time for sharing happy memories and family togetherness.
Pan de Muerto - Dead Bread
At Los Bagels, we make pan dulce, a cinnamon-sugar flavored Mexican sweet bread, however on Day of the Dead we shape our bread into three traditional shapes: men, women, and round with crossed bones on top. They are symbols of the departed family and friends and are also an offering on the altars. Kids and adults alike love these colorfully decorated treats and they are especially wonderful with a cup of Mexican hot chocolate.
Offrenda - The Altar
At both our shops we create a beautiful multi-tiered altar, decorated with bright marigolds, candles, various fruits, and then we invite the community to participate in the Day of the Dead celebration by bringing pictures or small momentos of their departed loved ones to be placed on the altar. Many are happy to be a part of this special day and to learn about another culture.
JEWISH HOLIDAYS
Purim
Purim is celebrated in early spring in honor or Queen Esther and her Uncle Mordecai. Together they saved the Jewish people from the King Ahasuerus' evil chief advisor, Haman. Haman wanted to kill all the Jews in Persia because they lived by different laws than him. Queen Esther was Jewish and she bravely went to her husband to have Haman stopped. Purim reminds the Jewish people to have courage and to always help one another. Los Bagels celebrates Purim by baking traditional sweet cookies called hamantaschen, which have either a poppyseed or prune filling and are shaped like Haman's hat.
Passover
The Passover holiday is a celebration of freedom for the Jewish people. In the days of Moses, the Jews were held as slaves by the Egyptians, and after great turmoil were finally set free by God. During Passover families come together for a great feast called Seder, at which they eat Matzah and special foods from the Seder plate, drink wine, and read the story of Passover from the Haggadah. In honor of Passover, Los Bagels makes wonderful sweet coconut macaroons and fresh baked Matzah bread, an unleavened bread that represents the flat bread the Jews took with them when they were forced to leave Egypt in such a hurry.
Hanukkah
Hanukkah is also called the Festival of lights and is celebrated by lighting candles on the menorah, one candle a day for eight days. This is done in remembrance of how the Jewish people fought for the right to follow their own religion while under Syrian rule. When the war was finally won, the brave leader Judah only had enough oil to keep the Eternal Light burning for one day, but miraculously it burned for eight days. During Hanukkah, songs are sung, gifts are exchanged, games are played with dreidels and special foods like latkes (potato pancakes) are enjoyed. Los Bagels always offers a wonderful variety of menorahs for sale as well as Hanukkah candles, chocolate geldt, and free colorful dreidels for the kids.
HOLIDAY BREADS
To celebrate all the various year-end holiday festivities, Los Bagels makes and sells three different mini-loaves of oh-so-good quick breads as well as our special not-to-be-missed scrumptious fruitcake.
Lime Walnut - You know the holidays are near when a baker asks if anyone wants to zest some limes. It takes a lot of shredded lime peel to make enough Lime Walnut bread to get us through the holidays. This is a moist, nutty bread with a tangy lime glaze.
Rum Pumpkin - Perhaps our best-selling holiday bread, many customers have been known to buy a few extra loaves for their freezer so they can enjoy them long after the holidays are over! A moist pumpkin and spice bread with a sweet rum glaze.
Huckleberry - Local wild-harvested sweet huckleberries are the stars of this bread. Need we say more?
Fruitcake - Fruitcake has gotten a bad rap over the years as the gift that keeps on giving. Usually a fruitcake will last forever (due to all the weird ultra-preserved "fruit") and if you get one, you can save it 'til next year when you can pass it on to someone low on your gift list, but this is definitely not so with Los Bagels fruitcake. Ours is the best anywhere. We use dried papaya and pineapple, then add golden raisins, dates, almonds, walnuts, and pumpkinseeds, a quick soak in rum, and YUM. If you get one, you'll know you were at the top of someone's gift list!
